DESCRIPTION: Up to 25mm. A large mainly black species with the males having black and white legs, entirely black antennae and white markings around the eyes and the corner of the thorax. A creamy yellow spot is found at the back of the thorax on both sexes and there are dusky borders to the tips of the wings. BEHAVIOUR: Eggs are laid in the caterpillar of the Elephant Hawk-Moth and adults emerge from the pupa. DISTRIBUTION: An uncommon species with scattered records from South Wales up to Southern Scotland. HABITAT: Woodland edges, hedgerows and sometimes gardens. PERIOD: June to early July.
